Super Visa Stay Duration Calculator

The #1 source of super visa confusion is how long parents can actually stay. Answer a few questions to get a clear authorized-until date.

Use the date of their latest entry on the super visa.

Look for a hand-written date next to the entry stamp. If there is one, it overrides the default.

Most super visa holders do not need one. Filing it can shorten the stay.

A passport expiring early can limit the stay.

This is general guidance only. The authorized stay is ultimately set by the CBSA officer at the port of entry. Confused about visitor records? Read our visitor record guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can my parent stay 2 years or 5 years on a super visa?

It depends on the entry date. Super visa holders who entered Canada on or after June 22, 2023 can stay up to 5 years per entry. Those who entered before that date were authorized for 2 years per entry. A specific leave-by date stamped by a CBSA officer overrides the default.

Does the super visa expiry date affect how long my parent can stay?

No. The super visa (a temporary resident visa) expiry date controls when your parent can enter Canada, not how long they can stay once admitted. A stay already underway is not cut short when the visa sticker expires.

What if CBSA didn't stamp the passport at all?

If no date was stamped and the entry was on or after June 22, 2023, the 5-year authorized stay applies automatically.

What happens if my parent's passport expires before the 5 years?

In practice the authorized stay is limited by the passport's validity. Renew the passport well in advance to preserve the full stay.
