Super Visa Extension: Can You Extend a Super Visa?
Last updated:
'Extending a super visa' can mean two different things. Knowing which one you need avoids wasted applications.
Extending the stay (visitor record)
If your parent is in Canada and wants to stay longer than their current authorized period, they apply for a visitor record. Apply before the current stay ends so they can remain under maintained status.
Getting a new super visa
The super visa sticker can be valid for up to 10 years (or until passport expiry). When it expires, your parent applies for a new super visa from outside Canada — meeting the income, insurance and medical requirements again.
Which do you need?
- Want to stay longer this visit without leaving → visitor record.
- Visa expired and want to re-enter later → new super visa application.
