What Happens When a Super Visa Expires While in Canada

Last updated:

A super visa's expiry date controls when your parent can enter Canada — not how long they can stay once admitted. If the visa sticker expires while they are already in Canada, their current authorized stay is not cut short. They only need a valid visa to re-enter after leaving.

Many families panic when they notice the super visa expires while their parent is still in Canada. In almost all cases, there is nothing to worry about.

Two different dates

There are two separate things at play:

  • The super visa (TRV) expiry — controls the last day your parent can enter Canada.
  • The authorized stay — controls how long they can remain in Canada after being admitted.

What the expiry does affect

If your parent leaves Canada after the visa expires, they will need a valid super visa (or eTA, depending) to come back. So the expiry matters for re-entry, not for the current stay.

Frequently asked questions

My parent's super visa expired but they're still in Canada — do they have to leave?

No. The visa expiry does not end a stay already underway. They can remain until their authorized stay ends, as long as insurance stays valid.

Can my parent leave and come back if the visa expired?

They would need a valid super visa to re-enter. If it has expired, they must apply for a new one before returning.
