Super Visa Photos: IRCC Specifications
Last updated:
Photos are a small part of the super visa application, but a photo that breaks the rules can delay everything. IRCC has exact specifications, and most photo shops know them — but it pays to check.
Size and background
IRCC requires a specific photo size with a clean, plain background. Get these basics right and the rest is easy.
- Photo size: 35 mm wide by 45 mm tall.
- Head height (chin to crown): 31 mm to 36 mm.
- Background: plain white or light-coloured, with no patterns or shadows.
- Two identical printed photos for paper applications.
- Taken within the last 6 months so it looks current.
- Printed on plain, high-quality photo paper, not glossy home prints.
Face and expression
The face must be clearly visible and neutral. These rules help the photo match the person at the border.
- A neutral expression — mouth closed, no smiling.
- Eyes open and clearly visible, looking straight at the camera.
- No glasses, if possible; if worn, eyes must be fully visible with no glare.
- Head uncovered, unless a head covering is worn for religious reasons (face must still be visible).
- Even lighting, with no shadows on the face or background.
Digital photo specifications
Most super visa applications are submitted online, so you upload a digital photo instead of mailing prints. The digital file has its own rules.
- Format: JPEG.
- Minimum dimensions: about 35 mm by 45 mm at high resolution.
- File size: typically between 60 KB and 240 KB (check current IRCC limits).
- The same background, expression, and head-size rules as printed photos apply.
Frequently asked questions
What size do super visa photos need to be?
35 mm wide by 45 mm tall, with the head measuring 31 to 36 mm from chin to crown, on a plain white or light background.
Can my parent smile in the photo?
No. IRCC requires a neutral expression with the mouth closed. Smiling or raised eyebrows can lead to the photo being rejected.
Do I upload a photo or mail prints?
For online applications you upload a digital JPEG that meets IRCC's size and dimension rules. Printed photos are only needed for certain paper-based steps.
