Super Visa Travel History: What to Include

Last updated:

The travel history section of the super visa form asks for the applicant's trips outside their home country over the last 10 years. You should include all international travel, including trips to the United States and land border crossings. An honest, complete travel history with prior visits to Canada, the US, or Europe can strengthen the application.

The travel history section of form IMM 5257 trips up a lot of applicants. It is not a trick — IRCC just wants a clear picture of where the applicant has travelled. Filling it in fully and honestly helps the application.

What to include

List the applicant's trips outside their country of residence over the last 10 years. For each trip, give the country, the purpose, and the approximate dates.

  • All international trips in the last 10 years, with country and dates.
  • Previous visits to Canada, the United States, the UK, Europe, Australia, and similar countries.
  • The purpose of each trip (tourism, family, business).
  • Trips even if the visa for that country was later cancelled or expired.

Do I include US trips and land crossings?

Yes. Include trips to the United States and any land border crossings, not just flights. IRCC can see US travel through shared border data, so leaving it out looks like an omission.

Short shopping trips across a land border still count as travel. If the applicant crosses often, give the general pattern and approximate dates rather than every single crossing.

If the applicant has little or no travel history

Having never travelled is not a reason for refusal on its own. Many first-time travellers get a super visa. If the travel-history fields are mostly empty, that is fine — just make the rest of the application strong.

Where this goes on the form

The travel history is entered directly in the relevant section of form IMM 5257. If there are more trips than the form has space for, attach a separate sheet listing the rest and note in the form that you have done so.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to list trips to the United States?

Yes. Include all US trips, including land border crossings. IRCC shares border data with the US, so US travel should always be declared.

What if my parent has never travelled abroad?

That is fine and not a reason for refusal. Many first-time travellers receive a super visa. Just leave the travel fields appropriately blank and make the rest of the application strong.

How far back does the travel history go?

List international trips from the last 10 years. Approximate dates are acceptable if exact ones are hard to remember.
