Super Visa Biometrics: How and Where

Last updated:

Most super visa applicants must give biometrics — fingerprints and a photo — after submitting the application. You book an appointment at a VFS Global centre or other collection point listed in your instruction letter. The biometrics fee is paid with the application, and once collected, biometrics stay valid for 10 years.

Biometrics are fingerprints and a digital photo that IRCC uses to confirm identity. For the super visa, this is a quick in-person step that happens after you submit the application.

When biometrics are required

Most applicants between 14 and 79 years old must give biometrics when applying for a visitor visa, including a super visa. After you submit and pay, IRCC emails a Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL) telling the applicant to book an appointment.

Where to give biometrics

Outside Canada, biometrics are usually collected at a VFS Global centre, which acts as IRCC's visa application centre in many countries. Some places use other approved collection points, all listed in the instruction letter.

Book the appointment online, choose the nearest centre, and arrive on time with the required documents. The visit itself takes only a few minutes.

Fees

The biometrics fee is paid online together with the visa fee when you submit the application — not at the centre. A family applying together may qualify for a capped family biometrics fee.

Validity and expired biometrics

Once collected, biometrics are valid for 10 years. If the applicant gave biometrics for an earlier Canadian application within the last 10 years, they may not need to give them again for the super visa.

Frequently asked questions

Does my parent have to give biometrics every time they apply?

Not if they gave biometrics for a Canadian visa within the last 10 years and those are still valid. IRCC reuses valid biometrics, so a repeat appointment may not be needed.

Where does my parent give biometrics?

Usually at a VFS Global centre or another approved collection point named in the Biometrics Instruction Letter. They book an appointment and attend in person.

Is there an age limit for biometrics?

Applicants aged 14 to 79 generally must give biometrics. Those under 14 or over 79 are usually exempt for visitor visa applications.
