Super Visa Letter of Invitation: Template and Guide

Last updated:

The letter of invitation is a signed letter from the host in Canada promising to support the visiting parent or grandparent. It must confirm the host's status, the family relationship, financial support, and details about where the visitor will stay. It is a required part of every super visa application. Our free generator builds a compliant letter in minutes.

The letter of invitation is one of the most important documents in a super visa application. It is the host's written promise to support the visit, and IRCC reads it closely. A clear, complete letter strengthens the whole application.

What the letter of invitation is

The letter is written and signed by the host — the child or grandchild in Canada. It tells IRCC who is inviting the parent, why, for how long, and how the host will support and house them during the visit.

What the letter must include

A strong letter answers all of IRCC's questions in one place. Include each of the following.

  • The host's full name, date of birth, and address in Canada.
  • Proof of the host's status: Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian.
  • The family relationship to the applicant (for example, 'my mother').
  • The applicant's full name, date of birth, and the purpose and length of the visit.
  • A promise of financial support and details of who pays for the stay.
  • Where the visitor will live and the number of people in the host's household.
  • A signed statement that the host will support the visitor and that they will leave at the end of the stay.

Income and insurance go with the letter

The letter works alongside two other key items: proof that the host meets the minimum income for their family size, and proof of CAD $100,000 in Canadian medical insurance for the visitor. The letter states these; the documents prove them.

Confirm the host's income with our income calculator before writing the letter, so the numbers match.

Signing and submitting

The host signs and dates the letter. It does not normally need to be notarized, though a notarized version can help in some cases. Upload it with the rest of the application package.

Need super visa insurance?

Frequently asked questions

Does the invitation letter need to be notarized?

Usually no. A signed and dated letter is normally enough. Some families choose to notarize it for extra assurance, but it is not a standard requirement.

Who writes the letter, the parent or the host?

The host in Canada (the inviting child or grandchild) writes and signs the letter. It is their promise to support and house the visiting parent or grandparent.

Can I write the letter myself?

Yes. As long as it covers all the required points, a self-written letter is fine. Our free generator makes sure nothing is left out.
